ABA Therapy Treatment for Autism
SERVICES
Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is a method used in ABA therapy that helps children to acquire new skills. DTT breaks skills down into discrete steps, which build upon each other to help the child attain the skill. This helps a child to gain repeated exposure and practice, while ensuring that they achieve success. The goal of a DTT program is always to generalize these skills into a child’s natural environment, across several different people and places. BRIGHTSPARK will incorporate DTT-style programming in a child’s treatment program when appropriate.

Many children with autism struggle with social interactions, ranging from communication to eye contact to take the perspectives of others. While not every child with autism will experience the same challenges in social situations, most children with autism benefit from additional support with social skills. Through the use of evidence-based practices, BRIGHTSPARK provides social groups with similar-aged peers to build the foundation for essential skills, such as conversational skills, turn-taking, and listener responding skills.
Children might benefit from one-on-one therapy emphasizing social skills, while others benefit from a group setting with many opportunities for peer interactions. Some children may have a combination of both direct and group therapy to improve social skills. The team at BRIGHTSPARK will develop an individualized plan for every child to facilitate great gains and progress.

Children often benefit from focused ABA treatment. While a comprehensive ABA treatment plan may be long-term, focused ABA intervention might take place over a more brief period. It also differs from comprehensive ABA treatment in that this approach has more specific targets and often requires fewer hours of services.

Focused ABA intervention helps children learn replacement behaviors and may include adapting the environment to reduce the likelihood of any challenging behaviors. During focused ABA, the parents and professionals will avoid reinforcing challenging behaviors to encourage the new, positive behavior.

In ABA therapy, one of the most successful ways to help a child make progress is by providing comprehensive ABA treatment. This type of intervention addresses a wide range of critical developmental skills, such as communication, social, and attention skills, rather than focusing on only one skill area.
This “whole child” approach to treatment allows children to make gains across a variety of developmental domains. Children make progress in comprehensive ABA intervention by teaching skills in small lessons through explicit directions and positive reinforcement. A comprehensive intervention plan may be long-term and occur in multiple settings.

One example of comprehensive ABA treatment is early intensive intervention for early learners. The goal of this treatment for early learners is to close the gap between the child’s skill level and that of peers who are typically developing. Early intensive interventions often include 30-40 hours of treatment per week. Comprehensive ABA intervention programs are often beneficial for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), depending on their skill level.

Behavior analysis is the science of behavior, with a history extending back to the early 20th century. Its guiding philosophy is behaviorism, which is based on the premise that attempts to improve the human condition through behavior change (e.g., education, behavioral health treatment) will be most effective if behavior itself is the primary focus.

To date, behavior-analytic scientists have conducted thousands of studies to identify the laws of behavior—the predictable ways in which behavior is learned and how it changes over time. The underlying theme of much of this work has been that behavior is a product of its circumstances, particularly the events that immediately follow the behavior. Behavior analysts have used this information to develop numerous techniques and treatment approaches for analyzing and changing behavior, and ultimately, to improve lives. Because this approach applied behavior analysis (ABA) is largely based on behavior and its consequences, techniques generally involve teaching individuals more effective ways of behaving through positive reinforcement and working to change the social consequences of existing behavior. Treatment approaches based on ABA have been empirically shown to be effective in a wide variety of areas (see ABA Subspecialty Resources).

Note: for the purposes of BACB certifications and examinations, ABA is defined as the content of the BCBA, BCaBA, and RBT Task Lists.
